Levesque battles way back into ring
Published August 24, 2007 at midnight
John Cena and Randy Orton are battling in SummerSlam's main event, but there's no question who the real headliner of Sunday's World Wrestling Entertainment pay-per- view show is.
Paul "Triple" Levesque will appear in a WWE ring against King Booker for the first time since tearing his left quadriceps during January's New Year's Revolution pay-per-view show. WWE has wisely kept Levesque off television to build excitement about his return, which should help make this one of the promotion's most successful pay-per-view ventures of 2007.
It also will be interesting to see whether Levesque's once-massive physique has changed in his time away from wrestling. A slew of WWE talent appears noticeably smaller since the promotion came under heavy media scrutiny for alleged steroid use by its performers in light of the June murder-suicide of Chris Benoit, who was found with a greatly elevated level of testosterone in his body in toxicology reports.
Levesque's return is overshadowing that of Rey Mysterio Jr., who will face Chavo Guerrero on the undercard. Mysterio (real name Oscar Gutierrez) recently began appearing again on live WWE shows after undergoing major knee surgery last October.
Mysterio also was affected by the Benoit situation when news reports surfaced that he, too, was a patient of Dr. Phil Astin, who's facing federal charges of writing improper prescriptions. Mysterio and former WWE grappler Mark Jindrak, who now wrestles in Mexico, are alleged to have received disproportionate amounts of painkilling medication from Astin. Astin was Benoit's personal physician and is alleged to have prescribed him excessive quantities of testosterone.
The Benoit fallout doesn't end there, as Steve O and other members of the Jackass crew reportedly backed out of a scheduled SummerSlam appearance amid the negative publicity WWE was receiving about the matter. Those clowns won't be missed, though, as WWE has stacked SummerSlam with such matches as the Great Khali vs. Batista, CM Punk vs. John Morrison and Umaga vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. Carlito.
WWE also will probably advance its story line about who is owner Vince McMahon's illegitimate "son." Let's hope it's not Triple H, as he's legitimately married to McMahon's daughter, Stephanie.
LOOKING UP: Things are looking rosier for Matt "Rosey" Anoia, who appears to have a legitimate chance at regaining his WWE roster spot after working in a non-televised match at this week's Monday Night Raw taping. Anoia has lost a significant amount of weight as a cast member of Fat March (9 p.m. Mondays, ABC), which features 10 overweight contestants attempting to drop pounds and earn prize money via a 570-mile walk from Boston to Washington, D.C.
SO LONG: Two legends of Texas wrestling recently died: Dewey "Missing Link" Robertson and Bronko Lubich.
Robertson, 68, died of cancer Aug. 16. Best-known for his painted face and a partially shaved head with a prominent clump of hair in the middle, Robertson was just as wild outside the ring as when he was performing. The Canadian- born Robertson chronicled his problems with alcohol, drug and steroid abuse in his 2006 autobiography, Bang Your Head!
Such issues derailed a career that spanned more than two decades, with Robertson becoming especially popular as the Missing Link while working in Dallas-based World Class Championship Wrestling in the mid-1980s. Robertson, though, was fired shortly after reaching WWE in 1985 and never again regained grappling prominence. Late in life, Robertson tried to help others with substance-abuse and mental- health issues.
Lubich also died of cancer, along with a series of other health problems, on Aug. 11 at age 81. Making his debut in 1948, Lubich was a top tag-team performer with Aldo Bogni before branching into officiating. Lubich was known as one of the top referees for WCCW during the defunct promotion's glory days in the 1980s.
