11-year-old girl on life-support
Published August 24, 2007 at midnight
An 11-year-old Commerce City girl is on life support and her 19-year-old brother has a broken arm after a Pontiac Grand Prix ran a red light this morning, slamming into their compact car.
Marcus King was driving his sister, Mercedes, to school when the accident happened at 7:31 a.m., Commerce police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said in a statement.
Mercedes, a sixth-grader at Kearney Middle School, is in critical condition at Children's Hospital, Sandoval said. Marcus King is being treated for a broken arm at a local hospital.
Accident investigators said the Kings' Dodge Neon was westbound on East 60th Avenue when it entered the intersection at Monaco Street on a green light. The Grand Prix driven by Yesica Moreno, 24, was southbound on Monaco Street when she allegedly ran the red light, crushing the Dodge's passenger side where Mercedes was sitting.
Moreno, of Commerce City, suffered no apparent injuries, police said.
All involved were wearing seatbelts, and neither alcohol nor drug use is suspected as a factor, Sandoval said. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether charges will be filed.
