Class 5A

One target in mind: Please pardon Ponderosa's Jon Major for feeling as though he will be touting a bull's-eye on his Mustangs jersey this season. After all, with the national attention he is receiving as a linebacker, it will be hard for opponents or fans to miss him on the football field.

Columbine starting where it finished: After Columbine's opening game last season, Curtis Cunningham was quick to admit he did not think the Rebels ultimately would win the Class 5A state football championship.

Class 4A

Walsh's experience key for Cherokee Trail: To say Gabe Walsh will endure a role reversal this season is not entirely accurate. As one of the top returning passers in the state, the senior quarterback from Cherokee Trail still is expected to put up gaudy numbers for the Cougars.

Pueblo South ready for another run: With a winning tradition and high expectations as motivation, the Pueblo South Colts are accustomed to not missing a beat whenever graduation wreaks havoc on their starting lineup.

Mustangs hoping to grow up in Year 2: Call this season a brief respite from the growing pains for the Mountain Range football team. The Mustangs had more than their share of them last year in their inaugural season, and they undoubtedly will experience many more next season as they make the jump from Class 3A to 5A.

Mining more tradition: More than 100 years ago, the Purgatoire River served as an oasis for tired travelers making their way along the Santa Fe Trail. The city of Trinidad emerged from its banks, a favorite trading center located 13 miles north of the New Mexico border, the midway point between Denver and Santa Fe.

Class A

Byers' line standing pat: More than any other time as a football player, Kasey Martin is striving to be an immovable object this year. Having feet set in concrete is going to be more important than ever as to how far the Byers Bulldogs advance this season.

Class A 8-man

Showing the right stuff: Granada football coach Manuel Gonzales had a hunch following the 2005 season. That hunch came in the form of Tyndan Marquez.

Class A 6-man

Eads looks to top it’s runner-up role: In making the transition from Class A 8- Man to 6-Man football, most teams have a problem adjusting to the nuances of the game. That wasn't the case for Kevin Lindholm and the rest of his Eads teammates, as the Eagles advanced to the state championship game in their first year in the 6-Man classification.
