Three keys

Key moments in the Rockies' 11-2 loss against the Pirates at Coors Field on Wednesday night:

1 The Pirates scored twice in the first with ample help from the Rockies. Left fielder Matt Holliday's two-base error put leadoff hitter Nate McLouth on third base, and he scored when Jose Bautista's line drive sailed over the head of center fielder Ryan Spilborghs. Bautista scored on Freddy Sanchez's double.

2 Josh Fogg gave up four home runs in a span of 12 batters, including a three-run shot by No. 8 hitter Jack Wilson in the second after a walk to Ronny Paulino and Jason Bay's infield single. Fogg also yielded home runs to McLouth in the second and fourth, sandwiched around Xavier Nady's homer in the third.

3 With one run home in the fifth, the Rockies loaded the bases with two out when second baseman Sanchez muffed a pop-up, pitcher Ramon Ortiz singled home a second run and Kazuo Matsui walked. But any chance for a big inning vanished when Jamey Carroll grounded to shortstop.

Etc.

Willy Taveras, on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 15 with a strained right quadriceps muscle, is progressing with his running program, and trainer Keith Dugger said the hope is Taveras will begin a rehabilitation assignment early next week. . . . Pitcher Rodrigo Lopez underwent surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right forearm. . . . Carroll made his first start at third base since April 23, 2006, against San Francisco and Garrett Atkins made his second start of the season at first base. Atkins' other start there was Aug. 11 against the Cubs. . . . Catcher Edwin Bellorin, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 8 with a strained left hamstring, began hitting Tuesday and is expected to jog outside today for the first time since the injury. Bellorin will have to go out on a rehabilitation assignment when he's ready to play. . . . Jeff Baker, who was hit in the head with a pitch Aug. 10, is taking grounders and batting practice with Triple-A Colorado Springs. Dugger said Baker might be able to begin a rehabilitation assignment this weekend with the Sky Sox. . . . After pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings in his first three games with the Rockies, Ramon Ortiz allowed three runs in three innings.
