Adams State picked to win in cross country

The men's and women's cross country teams from Adams State College were picked to finish first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll released Wednesday.

The women's team received 12 first-place votes; the men nine. Western State received the other first-place votes, the men's and women's teams finishing second in the polls.

Western State junior Kim Hogarth was chosen as the RMAC preseason male runner of the year, while Adams State senior Brittany Somers was selected for the women's honor.

On the men's side, Colorado Mines and Metro State tied for third, Colorado-Colorado Springs was fifth, Fort Lewis sixth, Regis 10th and Colorado Christian 11th.

In the women's poll, CU-Colorado Springs was third, Fort Lewis fourth, Metro State sixth, Colorado Mines seventh, Mesa State ninth, Regis 11th, CSU-Pueblo 12th and Colorado Christian 13th.

DU WOMEN'S TENNIS HONORED The University of Denver was one of 89 NCAA Division I women's tennis teams to receive the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team award with a 3.63 grade-point average last season under first-year coach Amy Jensen.

Annette Aksdal (3.98 GPA), Lorinda Boothman (3.85), Kyla Iwinski (3.77) and Rachel Sackmaster (3.66) earned ITA scholar-athlete status.

VON HAGEN JOINS CU Former Legacy High School athlete Alex Von Hagen has signed to compete for the University of Colorado track and field team in combined events and jumps.

Von Hagen, a state titlist in the long jump last season, was third at the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics and ranked seventh overall in the nation in the decathlon.

SOCCER OPENERS The Fort Lewis women's soccer team begins its season at 3 p.m. today against Eastern New Mexico at Dirks Field in Durango.

Adams State's women's soccer team also kicks off its season, hosting Montana State Billings at 1 p.m. today.

Among men's RMAC soccer teams with openers today, CSU-Pueblo plays at St. Edward's at 5 p.m.; Mesa State visits Westminster at 4 p.m.; Regis hosts Barry University at 1 p.m.; and Colorado Christian hosts Montana State Billings at noon.

BEES EDGE SKY SOX A two-run ninth gave the Salt Lake Bees a 9-8 Pacific Coast League win against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Wednesday night at Security Service Field.
