Georgia advances at Little League Series

A three-run home run by Dalton Carriker and a two-run single by Payton Purvis helped Warner Robins, Ga., beat Walpole, Mass., 8-1 on Wednesday at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.

Carriker also struck out seven in four-plus innings, finishing a game that had been suspended in the second inning Tuesday night because of rain.

Georgia (2-1) clinched a berth in the U.S. semifinals today and will play Chandler, Ariz., which eliminated Coon Rapids, Minn., 9-2.

The other U.S. semifinal will feature unbeaten Lubbock, Texas, against Lake Oswego, Ore.

In the international bracket, Mexicali, Mexico, lost both games of a day-night doubleheader, 4-2 to Taichung, Taiwan, and 11-1 to Maracaibo, Venezuela. Also, Willemstad, Curacao, beat White Rock, British Columbia, 6-2.

Japan will face Taiwan in one international semifinal today, with Venezuela going against Curacao in the other matchup.

MARBURY DEFENDS VICK New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury defended Michael Vick, saying dogfighting is a sport and comparing it with hunting.

Marbury spoke Monday about the federal dogfighting conspiracy charges against Vick while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y.

"I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9.

LAS VEGAS ARENA ON TAP Casino giant Harrah's Entertainment Inc. announced it will partner with AEG to build a 20,000-seat arena in Las Vegas capable of housing an NBA or NHL team.

The $500 million arena, behind the Bally's and Paris hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, is projected to open in 2010.

BECKHAM WILL PLAY Barring the unforeseen, David Beckham will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy tonight despite an appearance Wednesday with England's national team, which lost 2-1 to Germany in Wembley, England, and the long trip home.

PURDUE WOMEN PENALIZED Purdue's women's basketball team will lose two scholarships for this season and the school will spend two years on probation after the NCAA ruled a former assistant coach helped write a research paper for a player and made more than 100 improper recruiting calls.

FEDERER, HENIN TOP SEEDS Top- seeded Roger Federer and No. 5-seed Andy Roddick, last year's U.S. Open finalists, could meet earlier in this year's final Grand Slam of the season, with a potential quarterfinal match looming.

On the women's side, top-seeded Justine Henin found herself on the side of the bracket with both Williams sisters when the draw was announced.

INJURY FOR TENNESSEE Tennessee tight end Brad Cottam will miss most of the season with a left wrist injury.

WISCONSIN PICKS DONOVAN Tyler Donovan will begin the season as the starting quarterback for No. 7 Wisconsin.

ILLINI'S SMITH OUT Illinois guard Jamar Smith will sit out next season after a drunken-driving conviction.

Coach Bruce Weber said Smith will redshirt and rejoin the team next fall as a junior if he meets unspecified obligations.

UTEP PLAYERS AVOID FELONY CHARGES Two Texas-El Paso football players arrested last month after a brawl outside a downtown El Paso, Texas, nightclub will not face felony charges.

Receiver Tufick Shadrawy and linebacker Brian Wilkins, 20-year-old sophomores, had been accused of assault.

"After a complete review of the evidence in this case, my office will not pursue felony charges against those arrested," District Attorney Jaime Esparza said.

BENSON EARNS TRUCKS WIN Johnny Benson postponed a pit stop and then held off Brendan Gaughan to win the NASCAR Trucks Series O'Reilly 200 in Bristol, Tenn.

HERBERT GETS FINAL SPOT Doug Herbert ended a nearly three- year winless streak to earn the final spot in the Countdown to the Championship, defeating Rod "Hot Rod" Fuller in the rain-delayed final of the 23rd Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals in Mohnton, Pa.

Funny Car's Tony Pedregon, Pro Stock's Dave Connolly and Pro Stock Motorcycle's Matt Guidera also scored wins in the final regular-season race.
