DNA trips up burglary suspects
Published August 23, 2007 at midnight
Two men already behind bars may be responsible for several burglaries in Doulgas County, the sheriff's office said Wednesday.
And it was the blood left behind at the crime scenes that might doom them to more time in prison. DNA samples taken from the two matched the blood found by sheriff's detectives, deputy Cocha Heyden, sheriff's spokeswoman, said.
Kenneth Blau allegedly was responsible for at least two burglaries at recreation vehicle and trailer storage lots going back to 2004, and Patrick Jackson allegedly took part in three burglaries last October.
Blau, 32, and Jackson, 27, did not work together in the thefts, Heyden said.
In Blau's case DNA was collected from the crime scene in 2004, which was then entered into the Combined DNA Index System or CODIS. However, detectives at the time found no match with anyone who was incarcerated, the spokeswoman said.
However, Douglas County detectives got another break earlier this year when they received a call from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation that Blau recently was sentenced to prison for theft out of Jefferson County. His DNA matched the blood collected at the crime collected three years ago, Heyden said.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Blau for investigation of second-degree burglary, theft, first-degree criminal trespass, being in possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.
In Jackson's case deputies believe he broke into three businesses over a two-day period in October. A witness's description led investigators to Jackson.
Detectives collected blood from one of the burglaries.
Jackson was on parole at the time, and was picked up in Adams County for second-degree assault and criminal mischief eight days after the burglaries, Cheryl Ahumada, Colorado corrections spokeswoman, said. Douglas County detectives obtained his DNA, and were notified that his sample matched the blood found at the scene, Heyden said.
