Grandparents seek custody of missing Grand Junction woman's children

The parents of a missing Grand Junction mother of three are seeking custody of the woman's children, her father said today.
"We think we would be the superior caregivers," said Frank Birgfeld, of Centennial.
Frank Birgfeld said he filed court documents recently so he and his wife, Suzanne, are able to raise their grandchildren.
Their daughter, Paige Birgefeld, vanished June 28. Her vehicle was later found torched on the outskirts of Grand Junction. Authorities have said they suspect foul play.
Paige Birgfeld vanished after she arrived back in town June after a day trip to Eagle. Authorities have said both of Birgfeld's ex-husbands are cooperating.
Both, however, have been named "persons of interest."
Mesa County sheriff's spokeswoman Heather Gierhart has said neither Robert Dixon nor Ron Biegler is among the group of people investigators are focusing on.
Investigators have twice searched the home of another person of interest, Lester Ralph Jones, 56, of Grand Junction.
In July, Paige Birgfeld's father was named her conservator by a judge so he can handle her financial affairs, according to Frank Birgfeld.
He said he and his wife, along with other relatives who arrived at Paige's Grand Junction home shortly after they learned of her disappearance, as well as Dixon have cared for the children.
"Who was caring for the children? Everybody was," he said.
Before his daughter went missing, Paige Birgfeld was the children's primary caregiver, he said.
Frank Birgfeld said the children's father took the kids from Paige's home after he learned that the Birgfelds had petitioned for custody.
"I believe they're in town because there has been sightings around town," Frank Birgfled said of his grandchildren and Dixon. "But I don't know where they are. I don't know of their well-being. I don't know whether (the children are) enrolled in school," he said.
"I prefer to know that," he said.
