Avalanche signs O'Neill and Smith
Free-agent center Wyatt Smith and defenseman Wes O'Neill have signed deals with the Avalanche.
Smith signed for one year while O'Neill signed for three years.
Smith, 30, had three goals and three assists in 61 games with the Minnesota Wild last season. He has 10 goals and 19 assists in 186 career NHL games.
O'Neill, 21, had three goals and 18 assists in 42 games as a senior last year at Notre Dame.
The Avalanche announced 27 players would attend a rookie camp Sept. 8-11 at the South Suburban Family Sports Center in Centennial.
Two-hour workouts start at 9:30 a.m. and are open to the public. Admission is free.
WORLD CLASS The Ballyneal golf course in Holyoke has been named to Golf Magazine's list of the top 100 golf courses in the world.
Designed by Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf, Ballyneal is ranked 82nd on the list and is the only Colorado course selected. The same team is redesigning Mira Vista Golf Course in Aurora.
SKY SOX SLIP Rich Thompson's eight-inning double drove in two runs to help the Pacific Coast League's Tucson Sidewinders to a 7-6 victory against the host Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
ROSTER CHOSEN Colombian national soccer team coach Jorge Luis Pinto has selected a roster dominated by domestic league players for his team's exhibition match against Mexico at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
The roster doesn't include Major League Soccer's two leading Colombians: New York's Juan Pablo Angel or FC Dallas' Juan Carlos Toja.
ON THE RUN The Colorado State women's cross country team was picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference in a poll of league coaches and the Air Force men's team was picked to finish second.
COACH HIRED Former University of California player Leigh Gregory has joined the women's basketball coaching staff at the University of Denver, Pioneers coach Pam Tanner announced.
MUHLER WINS Brighton driver Cris Muhler won the Late Models race Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway in Erie.
Richard Burton, of Englewood, was a winner in Pro Trucks.
Barney Visser, of Englewood, was the winner in the Modified division.
