Sky Sox score late to nip Sidewinders
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored two runs in the ninth inning, one on Joe Koshansky's pinch-hit single, to beat the host Tucson Sidewinders 4-3 in a Pacific Coast League game Sunday night.
Denny Bautista got the win, pitching two scoreless innings in relief of Marc Kaiser, and Ryan Speier recorded his 31st save.
YOUNGS A WINNER Durango resident Elaine Youngs made a perfectly placed shot on the right sideline as she and teammate Nicole Branagh won the AVP Boston Open beach volleyball tournament title with a 15-21, 21-19, 16-14 win against Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh on Sunday in Quincy, Mass.
GOAL VEIN FOR MINES Sophomore forward Kayla Mitchell recorded a goal and two assists to lead the host Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team to a 3-0 exhibition victory Sunday against Midland Lutheran.

Tiffany Brown and Kelly LaVoie scored goals Saturday to help lead the Colorado College women's team to a 2-0 victory against Air Force.
Rocky Mountain High School graduate Jessica Smith notched a hat trick Friday to spark the Colorado Christian women's team to a 3-0 win against Midland Lutheran.
GARCIA MAKES MARK Colorado Ice defensive back Travis Garcia, a former Colorado State athlete, had 4 1/2 tackles Saturday for the Western Conference in a 49-25 loss to the Eastern Conference in the United Indoor Football All-Star Game in Bloomington, Ill.
FINAL FOUR The fourth-seeded Denver Outlaws (7-5) will face the Philadelphia Barrage (9-3) at noon MDT on Saturday in a Major League Lacrosse playoff semifinal in Rochester, N.Y.
The Rochester Rattlers (9-3) will face the Los Angeles Riptide (9-3) in the other semifinal.
MOD FINISH Fort Morgan driver Brad Kembel won the Modifieds feature race Saturday at I-76 Speedway. Nick Engen (Erie, Street Stocks), Jeff Richey (Brighton, Econos), Brian Beard (Greeley, Mini-Stock), Brandon Williams (Fort Morgan, Econo-Modifieds) and Tom Wertz (Cheyenne, Demolition Derby) also won.
TREJO, BYRUM IN FRONT Fort Lupton runner John Trejo won the Valley 5000 road race Friday in Loveland, finishing in 16 minutes, 29 seconds.
Erie resident Faith Byrum won the women's 5-kilometer race in 17:45.
