Crash into semi kills Denver man, 100
Published August 20, 2007 at midnight
A 100-year-old man was killed this morning when the car he was riding in smashed into a parked tractor-trailer in Adams County.
Troopers said the car's 21-year-old driver and two boys, ages 10 and 2, were taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where their conditions were not immediately available.
Julian Garcia of Denver died at the scene on Washington Street about a block north of East 58th Avenue, troopers said. Troopers were trying to determine the relationship of the car's four occupants.
Investigators said the driver, Lilia Castilla, was heading north on Washington Street about 10:20 a.m. when her 1998 Dodge Avenger went out of the traffic lane and onto the right shoulder of the road, troopers said. The car then plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer which was parked on the shoulder. No one was inside the tractor-trailer.
The impact hurled the 10-year-old boy, who was in the back seat unrestrained, into Garcia, troopers said. The smaller child was the only one in the vehicle who was restrained.
Troopers were trying to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
