Avalanche signs free agents ONeill, Smith

The Avalanche today signed two free agents, defenseman Wes ONeill and center Wyatt Smith.
O'Neill signed a three-year deald and Smith signed a one-year contract. Both will be placed in the Avalanches minor league system.
ONeill, 21, played four seasons at Notre Dame, where he finished second among Irish defensemen in points last season (21). The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder originally was drafted in 2004 by the New York Islanders.
Smith, 30, has appeared in 186 NHL games with the Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Phoenix Coyotes and Islanders. The 5-11, 205-pounder played at the University of Minnesota before being drafted in 1997 by the Coyotes. He appeared in a career-high 61 games with the Wild last season.
