Three keys

Key moments in the Rockies' 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night at Dodger Stadium:

1 Jeff Kent hit the first pitch of the second inning for a home run, the sixth of his career in 28 at-bats against Rockies starter Josh Fogg, igniting what became a five-run inning.

2 Left-handed pitcher Eric Stults, who had given up 15 runs in 12 2/3 innings of his previous three starts at Triple-A Las Vegas, retired the first six Rockies he faced, including consecutive strikeouts of Matt Holliday, Todd Helton, Garrett Atkins and Ryan Spilborghs. He finished with a career-high nine strikeouts. His previous career high was five.

3 Garrett Atkins hit a two-run home run in the ninth off Scott Proctor, the Rockies' first extra-base hit of the game. Takashi Saito, though, took over for Proctor and got the final two outs for his 32nd save in 35 opportunities.

Etc.

No. 1 draft pick Casey Weathers, who gave up two runs in his first professional inning, has worked eight shutout innings, allowing one hit, in his past seven appearances at Single-A Modesto and will not assume the closer role for the Nuts. . . . The Rockies have 84 stolen bases, one short of the team total for 2006 with 41 games to play. . . . Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent's home run in the second inning was the 361st of his career, tying Joe DiMaggio for 65th on the all-time list. . . . Former Rockies center fielder Juan Pierre stole his 50th base Friday, extending his streak of consecutive thefts without being thrown out to 17, dating to July 3. He is the fifth player in Los Angeles Dodgers history to steal 50 bases, the first since another former Rockies player, Eric Young, had 51 in 1999. . . . Right-handed pitcher Darren Clarke, with Double-A Tulsa, was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man major league roster for right-hander Elmer Dessens. . . . The Rockies' 11-9 loss Thursday was the first time a visiting team scored at least nine runs and lost at Petco Park. . . . Right-hander Ramon Ortiz said he welcomed the trade to the Rockies. "I don't care if I start or relieve, I just want to pitch and help the team win games," he said.
