Rockies report

Three keys

Key moments in the Rockies' 11-9 loss against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Thursday night:

1 Padres left fielder Termel Sledge was 1-for-22 with eight strikeouts against left- handed pitchers, but with two on and two out in the fifth and the Padres trailing 6-5, he flipped a two-run double down the left-field line off left-hander Jeremy Affeldt to key a nine-run rally.

2 Elmer Dessens, who had not pitched more than four innings or thrown more than 60 pitches in a game since April 28, 2005, was one out from getting out of the fifth inning with a 6-2 lead. But he gave up a two-out single to Geoff Blum and a three-run home run to Mike Cameron, leaving with a 6-5 lead the bullpen turned into an 11-6 deficit.

3 With the Rockies up 1-0, Brad Hawpe led off the second with a walk against Clay Hensley and took third on Yorvit Torrealba's double. But Hensley limited the Rockies to one run, on a Cory Sullivan sacrifice fly.

Etc.

In addition to the the nine-run sixth inning Thursday, the Padres scored 11 runs in the first inning of their July 29 game at Houston. That game was started by former Rockies right-hander Jason Jennings. . . . Padres right-hander Kevin Cameron had allowed four earned runs in 45 innings before giving up three runs while retiring one batter in the sixth inning.
