Rockies' Morales to start Saturday

LOS ANGELES — Rookie Franklin Morales is next.

The Rockies finalized plans Friday to bring up Morales and put him in the rotation for Saturday’s game against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Morales will fill the vacancy created by the loss of Jason Hirsh, who earlier fractured his right fibula.

With the addition of Morales, the Rockies will go with a 13-man pitching staff to help ease the demands on the bullpen, which has had to expand its workload in recent days because three other members of the Rockies rotation are on the disabled list.

In addition to Hirsh, Rodrigo Lopez has undergone right elbow surgery and Aaron Cook was sidelined with a strained muscle in his left side.

Rookies Morales and Ubaldo Jimenez, and journeyman Elmer Dessens, who pitched more than four innings Thursday for the first time in two years, are now in the rotation, along with Josh Fogg and Jeff Francis.

With the addition of a pitcher, the Rockies will have to decide whether they prefer versatility (Clint Barmes) or a left-handed offensive threat (Ian Stewart). Manager Clint Hurdle has talked several times this week about the fact there is such a short time remaining in the minor league season that Stewart’s development won’t be impacted by being with the Rockies, and he also has mentioned a desire for "a game-changing" bat on the bench.

If that holds true, Barmes would seem the odd man out to make room for Morales.
