Robbery, chase, crash spur Denver manhunt

Published August 17, 2007 at midnight

Police this afternoon are searching the downtown area for at least one robbery suspect who may be armed, DPD spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

One other armed suspect was apprehended near Speer Boulevard and Auraria Parkway late this morning.

The search came after Westminster police, with Denver police providing backup, chased a silver car carrying multiple suspects into Denver after an Arby's near Federal Boulevard and West 70th Avenue was robbed by three people about 11:05 a.m.

After leading the chase south on Federal and down Speer, the suspects' vehicle crashed into a Denver public works vehicle, Jackson said. The suspects bailed from the car near Speer Boulevard and Wewatta Street.

The suspect who was captured and the public works employee both were injured in the crash.

They were transported to Denver Health Medical Center where their conditions were not immediately available.

The Auraria campus was on partial lockdown for about 45 minutes. One parking lot was sealed off and a K-9 unit was being brought in to assist in the search.

Several streets were blocked in the area.
