NBA referees may face discipline in probe
The federal investigation into NBA gambling is generating information about other referees that could lead to disciplinary action short of criminal charges, authorities and lawyers involved with the case told The New York Times.
Although the FBI investigation continues, three people briefed on the case say it is focused on professional gamblers and has not uncovered any accusations of criminal wrongdoing by other referees or NBA insiders.
RIGHTS TRADED The Washington Wizards traded the rights to Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro to the Memphis Grizzlies for a future first-round draft pick.
JOHNSON LEADS Shawn Johnson was in the lead after the first of two days of the women's competition at the U.S. gymnastics championships in San Jose, Calif., scoring 61.7 points to finish 1.55 ahead of Ivana Hong and 2.65 ahead of two-time defending champion Nastia Liukin.
NO MEDALSThe U.S. basketball teams at the World University Games will go home without medals. The men's team finished ninth today after beating Israel. The women's team will play Taiwan today for fifth place.
LIBERTY WINS Shameka Christon made the go-ahead free throws with 9.8 seconds remaining to lift the WNBA's New York Liberty to a 73-72 win against the Washington Mystics.
