$956.93 is expected to be spent on back-to-school products by U.S. college students and parents this year, up from $880.52 last year.

• Of note: Students living on campus are predicted to spend an average of $1,529.45, which nearly doubles the amount predicted for those who will live at home.

THESE DOGS WINE

California vintners have embarked on an experiment to train dogs to sniff out the mealybugs that destroy their grapes. The dogs aren't proven bug sleuths yet, but they might help save the wine industry from millions in damages.

THE NEXT STEP

Former U.S. Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork sued the Yale Club of New York City for more than $1 million, saying he tripped and fell because of the club's negligence as he ascended a dais to give a speech. Bork, 80, is a former Yale Law School professor.
