Waner on watch list for Wade Trophy

ThunderRidge High School graduate and Duke guard Abby Waner was named Wednesday to the preseason watch list for the Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Waner and the Blue Devils went 29-0 in the regular season last season, becoming the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to go undefeated in the regular season. She averaged 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals.

The Wade Trophy will be awarded at the Women's Final Four in April in Tampa, Fla.

RAPIDS PAIR PICKED Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni and former Rapids goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann have been named to the U.S. men's national soccer team roster for an exhibition Wednesday against Sweden in Goteborg, Sweden.

51s BEAT SKY SOX The Las Vegas 51s cruised to a 8-4 win against the Sky Sox in a Pacific Coast League game in Colorado Springs. The second game of the planned doubleheader was postponed, setting up a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. today.

ICE ALL-STARS Defensive lineman Steve Frye, defensive back Travis Garcia, offensive lineman Gary Moore, linebacker Ryan Palmer, running back Eugene Reed and kicker Deric Yaussi will represent the Colorado Ice of the United Indoor Football League at Casey's All-Star Classic on Saturday in Bloomington, Ill.

SNOWBOARD TEAM SET Twelve Colorado athletes, including four Olympians, were chosen for the U.S. Snowboarding team.

Breckenridge's Steve Fisher is on the men's halfpipe pro team, and Dylan Bidez (Minturn), Matt Ladley (Steamboat Springs) and Broc Waring (Edwards) make up the rookie team. Minturn's Clair Bidez and Olympians Gretchen Bleiler and Tricia Burns, both of Aspen, are on the halfpipe pro team.

Olympian Jason Smith, of Basalt (men's SBX B team); Jordan Karlinski, of Basalt (women's SBX C team); Erica Mueller, of Steamboat Springs (women's alpine B team); Justin Reiter, of Steamboat Springs (men's alpine B team); and Olympian Chris Klug, of Aspen (men's alpine B team), also earned spots.

JIANG IN TOP 20 Littleton gymnast Michael Jiang finished ninth in the pommel horse competition in the men's 16-18 junior division finals at the Visa Championships in San Jose, Calif.

Jiang also was 11th in floor exercise, 14th on the vault, 16th in still rings and 17th on the parallel bars and horizontal bar.
