GREELEY - A 22-year-old Greeley man, identified by police as a gang member, was shot to death Wednesday morning in a trash bin after a foot chase with patrol officers.
Jimmy Joe Trevino, known on the streets as "Grand Psycho," died after an "officer-involved shooting," authorities said.
They said it is not clear who shot him.
Shortly before 3 a.m., a woman made a 911 call to Greeley police saying Trevino "had a gun placed to her head," said Jennifer Finch, a spokeswoman for the Weld County District Attorney's Office.
The suspect was gone when Greeley police officers arrived at the apartment in the 2500 block of First Avenue.
As police were interviewing the people in the apartment, the suspect returned then took off when he saw police.
At 3:17 a.m., police began chasing him, Finch said. Two minutes later, shots were fired and "Mr. Trevino was shot," Finch said.
A nearby resident, Dolores Romero, told The Greeley Tribune she heard five gunshots.
"We saw him run away," she told the Tribune.
Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner said the district attorney's office is investigating the details of the shooting, including how many shots were fired and by whom.
Garner said the question of whether Trevino had a weapon with him at the time of the shooting will be part of that investigation.
However, the man's wife, Veronica Trevino, told 9News he was carrying only his wallet and cologne when he left. She also told 9News that he was starting to turn his life around.
"He doesn't even own a pocket knife. I mean, he was on parole. He was trying to do good. He finally got a job. He was all proud, you know, Friday was going to be his first check," his wife told 9News.
Finch said the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
"At this stage, we can't release much," Finch said, adding that detectives are trying to determine how many shots were fired.
Finch said it appears Trevino may have violated his parole on an unknown offense by cutting his ankle bracelet.
