Body of New Jersey girl not Aarone Thompson, police say
Published August 16, 2007 at midnight
Aurora police investigating the Aarone Thompson case are talking to New Jersey law enforcement about a body of a little girl found by a hunter two years ago.
The girl in New Jersey would have been roughly the same age as Aarone, but Aurora officials caution they have no reason to believe that the body could be hers.
"We do not believe their case is in any way connected to ours," Aurora police spokesman Marcus Dudley said Wednesday.
Aarone's father, Aaron Thompson, reported her missing from his Aurora home in November 2005. She would have been 6 at the time.
In May, Thompson was indicted on 60 counts, including child abuse resulting in Aarone's death. He has not yet entered a formal plea, but in the past has proclaimed his innocence.
Aurora police say Aarone was murdered up to 18 months before she was reported missing.
New Jersey State Police on Monday released a composite drawing of an unidentified girl, who they say is probably black, between 5 and 9 years old and may have died between 2001 and 2004. The cause of death is still unknown.
The body was discovered in 2005 when a hunter in Clayton Park found the skull. An excavation later uncovered a complete skeleton and "a child's black Nike Air Force One shoe and a piece of canvas material, possibly from a handbag or book bag, with a distinctive print of Sylvester the Cat," according to New Jersey police.
When first contacted, a New Jersey police spokesman said he had no reason to believe there was a connection with Aarone.
"Nobody's come forward to tell us that," Capt. Al Della Fave said. He added, in reference to a citizen's media tip, "I think they're just taking our press release and making a giant leap of faith."
But Della Fave did say his department would contact Aurora police.
