DA: Greeley gang member 'Grand Psycho' shot to death

Published August 15, 2007 at midnight

A 22-year-old Greeley man identified by police as a gang member nicknamed "Grand Psycho" was shot to death this morning after a police foot chase.

Whether police shot him was unclear, though authorities called the incident that led to the death of Jimmy Joe Trevino an "officer-involved shooting."

Investigators are still trying to determine the details surrounding the case.

What they do know is that shortly before 3 a.m., a woman made a 911 call to Greeley police saying Trevino "had a gun placed to her head," said Jennifer Finch, a spokeswoman for the Weld County District Attorney's Office.

The suspect was gone when Greeley police officers arrived at an apartment on the 2500 block of First Avenue.

As police were interviewing the people in the apartment, the suspect returned to the area, then took off when he saw police.

About 3:17 a.m., police began chasing him on foot, Finch said.

Two minutes later, shots were fired and "Mr. Trevino was shot," Finch said.

Finch said the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The DA's office is investigating.

"At this stage, we can't release much," Finch said, adding that detectives are still trying to determine how many shots were fired.

Finch it appears Trevino violated his parole on an unknown offense by cutting his ankle bracelet. Trevino was a known gang member, according to Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner.
