Trooper: Suspect said he ran stop
Published August 14, 2007 at midnight
A state trooper testified Monday that Martin Morado had beer bottles in his car and, after a crash that killed an Eaton couple, told a witness he "ran the (expletive) stop sign."
Morado, 45, faces charges of vehicular homicide while driving recklessly, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving death for his part in the June 13 crash outside Greeley.
Morado and his wife were traveling in a Ford Taurus about 8 p.m. when Morado allegedly ran a stop sign at Weld County Road 54 and Weld County Road 45.
His car smashed into a station wagon carrying Monte Davenport, 61, and Sandy Davenport, 60. The couple apparently were killed on impact.
Weld District Judge Gilbert Gutierrez said he found sufficient evidence to order Morado to trial, which is set for Feb. 13.
Debbie Burk, a former paramedic, was one of the first people to respond to the accident, State Patrol trooper Robert Nuse said. Burk arrived to find Morado on his cell phone and asked him if he had called 911, Nuse said.
According to Nuse, Morado replied that he hadn't.
Burk then asked Morado what happened, to which Morado said he "ran the (expletive) stop sign," Nuse said.
Morado allegedly told witnesses he needed to retrieve his insurance papers then disappeared for more than 20 hours before he was arrested.
