Scouting report: San Diego Padres
Series history: The Rockies lead 111-110 but trail 59-52 in San Diego, including 16-15 at Petco Park. The Padres lead 5-4 this year and won two of three at Petco Park from April 6-8.
Roster: Outfielder Scott Hairston (left oblique) and catcher Michael Barrett (concussion) are on the disabled list. Reliever Doug Brocail is on the bereavement list. Left-handed relievers Joe Thatcher, right-handed reliever Mike Thompson and catcher Pete Laforest were promoted last weekend from Triple-A Portland (Ore.).
Quickly: Brian Giles hit five home runs in 13 at-bats and had seven RBI in three games last weekend in Cincinnati and is 8-for-21 during a five- game hitting streak. . . . The Padres were leading the division by one game at the All-Star break but have gone 14-16 and are second, three games behind Arizona. . . . Switch-hitting Josh Bard, who went to Cherry Creek High School, batted right- handed against three right-handers in the Cincinnati series. He didn't offer an explanation and said it was temporary, but he had his right wrist taped Sunday. He went 2-for-10 with one double, one triple and four RBI in the series. . . . Marcus Giles is hitless in his past 10 at-bats, has one hit in his past 28 and is 5-for-50 since the All-Star break. He has gone 124 at-bats without a home run. . . . Before blowing his third save of the season in 32 attempts Friday, closer Trevor Hoffman was successful on 25 straight save opportunities and had allowed three earned runs in 32 1/3 innings in his previous 33 games.
Etc.
In his third start for Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday night, left-hander Franklin Morales gave up five runs, nine hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in the Sky Sox's 6-5 home win against Tacoma. Morales, 21, would be on schedule to start Saturday for the Rockies, but he has nearly as many walks (13) as strikeouts (16) in 17 innings for the Sky Sox. . . . Kazuo Matsui has one stolen base in each of his past four games. He is 23-for-25 in stolen bases this season with eight consecutive steals since he was last caught June 29. . . . Rockies pinch hitters ended an 0-for-16 drought with five hits in their past 13 at-bats, including two doubles, a grand slam by Jamey Carroll and five RBI. . . . Geronimo Gil has yet to get the ball out of the infield in four at-bats.
