Riley says he'll coach three more seasons

Pat Riley isn't ready for another retirement.

Riley said he'll be back as coach of the Miami Heat for three more seasons.

The 62-year-old gave up coaching in 2003, then returned two years later and helped the team to the 2006 NBA title.

"We hope that, over the next three years . . . that we're going to be a contender," Riley said. "And then after that, we'll re-evaluate the whole situation."

BASKETBALL WITHDRAWALS Kirk Hinrich joined Greg Oden and Shane Battier in pulling out of U.S. Olympic basketball training camp.

Seattle forward Nick Collison also was added to the squad, leaving the Americans with 16 players as they return to Las Vegas for practice starting Wednesday.

The roster must be trimmed to 12 the day before the FIBA Americas tournament begins Aug. 22.

KNIGHT JOINS CLIPPERS The Los Angeles Clippers signed Brevin Knight, one month after the veteran free-agent guard was waived by the Charlotte Bobcats.

"Brevin is one of the better defensive point guards in the league," Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor said.

WARRIORS DUMP FOYLE The Golden State Warriors have reached agreement on a buyout with center Adonal Foyle, parting ways with the 10-year veteran.

SHOCK SUSPENSION Detroit Shock forward Kara Braxton was suspended for two games without pay by the WNBA after pleading guilty to operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

UNUSUAL WAIVER The NCAA granted an unprecedented waiver to Texas Tech center Esmir Rizvic, allowing him to remain eligible for an additional half season.

Rizvic missed the second half of last season after his eye socket was fractured by an opponent's elbow.

CUP PICKS Hunter Mahan and Lucas Glover were picked by captain Jack Nicklaus to fill out the U.S. team for golf's Presidents Cup, while Mike Weir (Canada) and and Nick O'Hern (Australia) got the last two spots on Gary Player's International squad.

They join 10 players on each squad who automatically qualified for the event, which is scheduled for next month at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

TRINIDAD FIGHTING AGAIN Former welterweight, super-welterweight and middleweight boxing champ Felix Trinidad is coming out of retirement again, this time for a shot at Roy Jones Jr.

Trinidad, who hasn't fought since losing to Winky Wright in May 2005 and who has won only two bouts in the past six years, announced plans to meet Jones in January at an unnamed site.

KITCHEN RETURNS The Florida Panthers hired former St. Louis Blues coach Mike Kitchen as an assistant coach.

ROONEY GONE Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney will miss two months because of his broken left foot, dealing a blow to England's hopes of reaching next year's European Championship.

LOGO BLOCKED A ruling by an Atlanta federal appeals court cleared the way for NASCAR to prevent AT&T from featuring its logo on Jeff Burton's No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

ITALIANS LEAD STAGE Damiano Cunego led a 1-2 Italian finish in the fourth stage of the Tour of Germany in Sonthoven and defending champion Jens Voigt kept the overall leader's yellow jersey.

ASTANA SHUNNED Organizers of the Spanish Vuelta withdrew their invitation to the Astana team to compete in the 2007 race as a result of three recent positive doping tests.

FERRER COASTS David Ferrer beat 6-foot-9 John Isner 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the first round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters tennis tournament in Mason, Ohio.

SAFINA SURVIVES Dinara Safina withstood Camille Pin's upset bid, hanging on for a 7-6 (11-9), 3-6, 7-5 opening-round win over the qualifier at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Toronto.
