Camper's death puzzles cops
Published August 14, 2007 at midnight
SUMMIT COUNTY Authorities are baffled how an Oklahoma woman died on Baldy Mountain.
"There was no external trauma," said Joanna Richardson, Summit County coroner. "There was nothing remarkable. We're looking at alcohol as a possible factor."
An autopsy was conducted on Johanna Briscoe, 29, of Oklahoma City, on Monday. But the cause of death had not been determined. Toxicology results will be available in two weeks.
Briscoe was identified Monday as the woman who was found dead Saturday at a campsite a quarter-mile from North Fuller Placer trailhead.
Authorities were alerted to Briscoe on Saturday morning after a hiker found Briscoe's boyfriend, lying semi-conscious near the trailhead, off of Baldy Road, north of Breckenridge. His name was not released Monday.
The boyfriend told the hiker he had been stabbed and that his girlfriend was dead at their campsite.
But he was so disoriented that he could not remember where the campsite was. Briscoe was found in a tent.
Briscoe's boyfriend told authorities that he and Briscoe had a domestic dispute Friday night and that Briscoe had stabbed him.
The boyfriend said that she had bandaged his wound before he fell asleep. He said that when he awoke the next morning, he found her dead and decided to hike out for help.
Family members were still in shock over Briscoe's death Monday.
They remembered her as a "free spirit" who moved to Colorado more than five years ago to be with a male friend. She had worked a variety of jobs but dreamed of becoming a commercial artist.
"She drew, she made stained glass," said her mother, Marilynn Carmine of Blanchard, Okla., who was on her way to Colorado yesterday. "She just hadn't found her right niche yet."
Carmine said her daughter liked camping, but found it hard to believe that Briscoe had been living in the woods.
"She was not a transient," Carmine said. "She worked at different places out there. She's been living in motels."
The last time Carmine talked to her daughter was last month. She said Briscoe seemed to have found inner peace.
"She seemed very happy, very bubbly," Carmine said.
