Wambach, Lloyd keep U.S. women on roll

CHICAGO - Forward Abby Wambach and midfielder Carli Lloyd each scored two goals as the U.S. women dominated New Zealand 6-1 on Sunday at Soldier Field in their next-to-last tuneup before the women's World Cup next month in China.

Wambach scored the first and final goals of the match and moved into fifth place among U.S. women in career goals, with 77.

The Americans, now 5-0 in a six-game pre-World Cup tour, peppered New Zealand goalie Jenny Bindon with 10 first-half shots while opening a 3-0 lead.

The U.S. hosts Finland in its final international friendly Aug. 25 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. It will open World Cup Group B play against North Korea on Sept. 11 in Chengdu, China.

BECKHAM SITS: English megastar David Beckham resumed his tour of American soccer benches Sunday, sitting out the Los Angeles Galaxy's match against the New England Revolution to rest his tender left ankle.

Beckham has yet to start for the Galaxy since signing a five- year, $32.5 million contract. He made his Major League Soccer debut Thursday but was back on the bench against New England.

Taylor Twellman scored in the 55th minute to give the Revolution a 1-0 victory in front of a crowd of 35,402.

"He's the best player in the league," said Dan Higgins, 16, from South Kingston, R.I. "So, yeah, I'm disappointed. On a disappointment scale of one to 10, I'd say it's about a nine."

ETC.: Jozy Altidore scored twice to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 3-0 victory against Toronto FC in East Rutherford, N.J. The 17-year-old Altidore, the youngest player in MLS, has scored five goals this season. . . . Former Colorado Rapids goalie Marcus Hahnemann made five key saves to help Reading hold defending champion Manchester United to a 0-0 tie in the English Premier League.
