Gas pipeline explodes in Fort Collins

Published August 13, 2007 at midnight

A natural gas pipeline exploded in Fort Collins about 10 this morning when a construction worker accidently cut it.

Paramedics treated the construction worker on site, and there were no other injuries, said Patrick Love, a spokesman for the Poudre Fire Authority.

Early this afternoon, a small fire was still burning at the site near Harmony and Ziegler roads, he said.

Fort Collins firefighters were working to close off the 4-inch pipeline, which was feeding the fire.

Love said the authority received several calls shortly after 10 a.m. about a possible gas explosion on Ziegler Road. The area is closed to traffic during the construction.

The construction worker, who was operating a large machine, "jumped free and ran away from the scene" when he realized what happened, Love said.

A short time later, an explosion occurred and the area caught fire.

"This is not any hazard to the public or to any surrounding buildings," he said.

Eight fire engine companies, two trucks, a hazardous materials team, and several fire chiefs were called to the scene, Love said.
