Driver faces trial in couple's hit-run deaths

Published August 13, 2007 at midnight

Martin Morado, accused of killing an Eaton Couple in a hit-run, told a woman who came upon the scene that he "ran the (expletive) stop sign," a state trooper testified today.

A judge in Weld District Court found enough evidence to move forward with the charges of vehicular homicide while driving recklessly, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving death for Morado's part in the June 13 crash.

Morado, 45, and his wife were traveling in their Ford Taurus about 8 p.m. that day when Morado allegedly ran a stop sign at Weld County Road 54 and Weld County Road 45. His car smashed into a station wagon carrying Monte Davenport, 61, and Sandy Davenport, 60. The couple died.

State Patrol troopers said Morado fled, leaving the couple and his injured wife at the scene.

Troopers investigating the scene said they found an open bottle of alcohol in the car and possibly a small amount of marijuana.

Morado eluded police for more than 20 hours before being arrested as he walked into the North Colorado Medical Center, where his wife was being treated.

Colorado State Patrol trooper Robert Nuse testified that a witness told him she asked Morado what had happened. He told her he "ran the (expletive) stop sign," Nuse said.

Nuse testified that accident reconstruction showed Morado ran the stop sign and didn't use his brakes. Nuse said an open bottle of beer was wedged between the driver's seat and the center console of Morado's car.

Morado is scheduled for trial on Feb. 13.
