Camper stabbed, girlfriend dead in Summit County

Published August 13, 2007 at midnight

A disoriented man, bloody from stab wounds, told a hiker who found him at a Summit County trailhead that his girlfriend was dead, and sheriff's deputies found her body at their campsite, according to a sheriff's news release.

Deputies were called Saturday morning to an area of the North Fuller Placer trailhead off Baldy Mountain Road, after a hiker found the semi-conscious, incoherent man, the news release said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, told the hiker he could not recall where the campsite was. He was taken to St. Anthony's Summit Medical Center and was transferred later to a Denver hospital, the news release said.

Later that day, the man told deputies he and his girlfriend had an argument and she stabbed him, according to the news release. She then bandaged his wounds, and he fell asleep, the release said.

He told deputies that when he woke up the next morning, his girlfriend was dead, the release said. He then set out to look for help.

Authorities said the blood stains found in the woman's hand are consistent with his claim of being stabbed.

Deputies are continuing to investigate. An autopsy was scheduled to determine her cause and manner of death.

No charges have been filed.
