Three keys
Key moments in the Rockies' 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday night at Coors Field:
1 First baseman Jeff Baker's throwing error put runners on first and third with no out in the third. Aaron Cook caught Matt Murton's comebacker and ran toward third base to get Jacque Jones, walked Mark DeRosa and gave up a slow, run-scoring grounder to Mike Fontenot. But instead of limiting the damage there, Cook gave up a two-run single to Jason Kendall, who lined Cook's 0-1 pitch into center.
2 After loading the bases with two out and stranding three runners in the seventh, the Rockies loaded the bases with no out in the eighth against Carlos Marmol but scored only one run. Bobby Howry, who inherited this situation, got Brad Hawpe to pop out, retired Troy Tulowitzki on a slow, run-scoring grounder and got Yorvit Torrealba to fly to center.
3 Cook gave up a run in the fourth on doubles by pitcher Jason Marquis leading off and Jones with one out and yielded a two-out homer to Jones in the sixth, just Jones' third this season.
Etc.
Injured closer Brian Fuentes started for Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday, giving up one hit and recording one strikeout in one inning. Fuentes, who threw all nine of his pitches for strikes, will be re-evaluated today and is scheduled to throw out of the bullpen for the Sky Sox on Sunday. . . . The Rockies' loss ended their team- record streak of nine consecutive victorious series at home. . . . Kazuo Matsui went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Matsui has hit .516 (16- for-31) during the streak. . . . Garrett Atkins went 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his season-best 10-game hitting streak. . . . Right-handed relief pitcher Jorge Julio extended his shutout streak to 7 1/3 innings. . . . Four of Tulowitzki's past seven hits have gone for extra bases. . . . Once Baker left the game after getting hit in the head by a pitch from the Cubs' Marquis, Atkins made his fifth appearance this season at first base, his first since June 9. Manager Clint Hurdle said Baker was listed as having a mild concussion. . . . Rockies reliever Manny Corpas had allowed only one earned run in 11 1/3 innings before surrendering a leadoff homer to Murton in the ninth. Murton, who also homered Thursday night, has only four home runs this season. . . . Third baseman Aramis Ramirez rejoined the Cubs after his right wrist was examined in Chicago.
