CU's Sutherland out for volleyball season
University of Colorado outside hitter Amber Sutherland will sit out the volleyball season because of a shoulder surgery.
Sutherland will redshirt for the season after being named earlier this week to the preseason All-Big 12 volleyball team.
Meanwhile, Jil Thomason has been promoted to associate head coach of the CU volleyball team and former Buffaloes standout Ashley Nu'u will serve as a student assistant.

Former University of Denver player Matt Brown has been hired as an assistant men's lacrosse coach for the Pioneers.
Gavin Markovits has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach at Metro State.
The Northern Colorado volleyball team was picked to finish eighth in the Big Sky Conference in a preseason poll of league coaches.
Dakota Ridge High School graduate Tony Anderson has signed a letter of intent to play men's basketball at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan.
ADVANCING IN BOULDER Ted Burghardt beat sixth-seeded Steve Williams 6-1, 6-1, and Brandon Lupo ousted seventh-seeded Calix Van Lier 6-4, 6-3 in the Boulder Open at the Millennium Harvest House.
Top-seeded Cory Ross beat Peter Rouch 6-1, 6-3 and second- seeded Lewis Miller eliminated Angelo Faustino 6-0, 6-3.
In women's open singles, top-seeded Lauren Strasburger, second-seeded Tabatha Knop and third-seeded Debra Streifler advanced to the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Shannon Cross lost to Brittany Matava 6-2, 6-3.
MATCH PLAY SHOWDOWN DU golfer Dawn Shockley will face Colorado State athlete Stefanie Ferguson in the final today of the Colorado Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship at Woodmoor Pines Golf and Country Club in Monument.
Estes Park resident Shockley advanced after winning her semifinal 1-up against Monarch High School athlete Brooke Collins.
Broomfield High School graduate Ferguson advanced, winning in 20 holes against CU athlete Lindsay Senger.
ELDORADO RUN Boulder resident Eric Griffiths won the Eldorado Springs Cure four-mile race, finishing in 20 minutes, 27 seconds.
Boulder runner Nanae Kuwashiro won the women's portion in 22:38.
