NCAA board won't revisit texting ban
Published August 10, 2007 at midnight
BOULDER - For now, new- age football coaches will have to be satisfied with old-school methods of contacting recruits after the NCAA Division I board of directors Thursday declined to reconsider the ban on coaches text-messaging prospects.
The proposal banning texting will be put before Division I delegates for a vote at the NCAA Convention in January in Nashville, Tenn.
"We simply haven't seen a good proposal (to modify the ban) come forward yet," NCAA vice president Dave Berst said on a teleconference.
But, he added, that doesn't mean alternatives aren't out there. Some proposals for modifying the ban are being drafted by conferences and would be considered before a final vote is taken to override the legislation.
University of Colorado coach Dan Hawkins hoped for a different outcome, but he's hopeful modification is feasible.
"The reality is that (texting) is the same as phone calls," he said. "Once you sit down and explain the rationale and come up with some guidelines, I think it'll probably be a little bit more feasible."
KNOCKING HEADS: After four days of split workouts (newcomers, veterans), the Buffaloes don full pads today for the first full-squad practice. Full- squad two-a-day drills begin Saturday, with the camp's first scrimmage scheduled for Sunday (10 a.m. to noon).
