Heat reunites O'Neal with guard Hardaway

Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal are together again.

The 36-year-old Hardaway, who last played an NBA game in November 2005, signed with the Miami Heat and is reuniting with O'Neal - his former Orlando Magic teammate in the mid-1990s.

"Penny is a player who has been an All-Star and has enjoyed an illustrious career," Heat president Pat Riley said.

"We have been impressed at his hard work and dedication this summer."

ROSTER FILL The Boston Celtics started filling their roster around their three All-Stars, signing center Scot Pollard and guard Eddie House.

The two join Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce as the Celtics try to end their 21-year championship drought.

NEW DEAL Chicago Blackhawks coach Denis Savard received a contract extension through the 2008-09 season.

Savard has been the team's coach since November after the dismissal of Trent Yawney.

FEDERER CRUISES Defending champion Roger Federer breezed past Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-1 to reach the Rogers Cup tournament quarterfinals in Montreal.

Federer, who won his fifth straight Wimbledon title this year, has won 14 consecutive matches at the Canadian tournament.

SHARAPOVA TAKES MARATHON Maria Sharapova survived a nearly three-hour struggle, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 against Michaella Krajicek to reach the East West Bank Classic quarterfinals in Carson, Calif.

WILLIAMS WILL RETURN Serena Williams, who has been out with a thumb injury since reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, will return to the court later this month at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, Conn.

THOMPSON MAKES HISTORY Alexis Thompson became the youngest quarterfinalist in the 107-year history of the U.S. Women's Amateur golf tournament.

The 12-year-old, home-schooled seventh-grader from Coral Springs, Fla., also the youngest qualifier in U.S. Women's Open history, beat 12-year-old Pearl Jin 5 and 4 in a second-round match in Carmel, Ind.

STRONG START Minea Blomqvist shot 4-under 68 to take a one-shot lead and hometown favorite Annika Sorenstam was three shots back after the first round of the Scandinavian TPC in Loddekopinge, Sweden.

CORNERBACK RELEASED University of Washington cornerback Jordan Murchison was released from a Seattle jail on $10,000 bail after turning himself in for failing to appear in court on a felony assault charge.

HURRICANES AILING University of Miami linebacker Glenn Cook might miss the first month of the regular season with an injured foot and safety Lovon Ponder also is sidelined indefinitely with an undisclosed injury.

NO CHARGES UCLA receivers coach Eric Scott will not be charged in connection with a residential burglary last month.

WALKER REDSHIRTS Kansas State men's basketball forward Bill Walker, who played only six games last season because of an injury, was awarded a medical redshirt from the Big 12 Conference.

SURGERY SET UCLA sophomore forward James Keefe will have surgery on his left shoulder today after tearing cartilage while playing this summer. His recovery will take four months.

HAMMON STRIKES BACK Former Colorado State athlete Becky Hammon had 16 points and eight assists in her return from a foot injury to help the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars win 72-61 against the Sacramento Monarchs.
