Woman to stand trial in niece's death

GREELEY - A woman accused of child abuse resulting in the death of her 7-year-old niece will stand trial and faces an arraignment next month, a Weld County District Court judge ruled Wednesday.
Genevieve Barea, 45, listened to prosecutors present a timeline of the early morning hours of March 9, when the young girl was said to be vomiting, frail and having skin described by one of her brothers as "like ice water."
Rita Wolf, a detective with the Evans Police Department, testified that she saw the body of LoReyna Barea at the autopsy that afternoon. "There were so many bruises on her body," Wolf said, "I stopped counting after 30-something."
Genevieve Barea and 47- year-old Dan Partch were home when the young girl died.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Rourke said they didn't do the bare minimum to preserve the child's life.
Prosecutors also pointed out that LoReyna weighed 35 pounds and was 4-foot-1 - putting her in the lowest percentile of children her age in terms of weight and height.
However, Barea said the girl was frail and emaciated when they took custody of her and her siblings after their mother died in February.
Partch's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday. Barea's arraignment is set for Sept. 5.
