Texas' Jones released from jail

Published August 9, 2007 at midnight

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas freshman defensive tackle Andre Jones, arrested on a felony robbery charge, has posted bail and been released from jail.

Jones is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon at an Austin apartment last month and had been held on $40,000 bond until he was released Tuesday. His attorney, Ariel Payan, said Jones is a victim of mistaken identity and was not at the apartment.

Jones has given him names of people who should be able to verify his whereabouts when the crime took place, Payan said.

Jones has been suspended indefinitely from the team by coach Mack Brown. Also charged in the robbery is former Texas defensive back Robert Joseph, who was dismissed from the team after his arrest on a separate burglary charge in June.

COWBOYS' SWEEN CONFIDENT: A season after showing Wyoming coaches he was capable of getting the job done, sophomore Karsten Sween is the clear starter at quarterback even as he seeks to improve.

In October, the then redshirt freshman had replaced junior Jacob Doss at halftime of a 40-34 double-overtime loss at Syracuse and hit 19-of-27 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns.

Sween also orchestrated an 88- yard drive in the final minutes of regulation, helping tie the score at 27-27 with five seconds left with a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Hoost Marsh.

"After that drive was when I knew we had our guy and may have found someone special at quarterback," coach Joe Glenn said.

Sween won five of his seven starts the rest of the way and helped Wyoming finish 6-6 and in a tie for third place in the Mountain West Conference at 5-3.

His progress was delayed slightly in the offseason after some minor knee surgery. His health wasn't an issue heading into fall camp.

"It's 100 percent, and I feel great," Sween said.

The quarterback is a leader on the field, and he said that being a leader should be easier this season.

"It was awkward at times last season, with a redshirt freshman in there trying to be a leader with a lot of juniors and seniors and most everyone older than me," he said. "But that has improved during spring ball and over the summer. I feel more comfortable being a leader."
