Three keys
Key moments in the Rockies' 19-4 win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field:
1 After scoring once in the first inning, the Rockies batted around and scored seven runs in the second, six coming with two out. Ryan Spilborghs led off with a home run. Matt Holliday tripled home two runs and Brad Hawpe hit a two-run homer.
2 Jeff Francis gave up a leadoff triple in the third but struck out Damian Miller, got Yovani Gallardo to pop out and Corey Hart to line out.
3 Leading 11-2, the Rockies batted around again in the fourth and scored five runs. Yorvit Torrealba and Garrett Atkins had run-scoring doubles, and Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run homer.
Etc.
Holliday (10 games), Atkins (nine) and Kazuo Matsui (seven) all extended hitting streaks Wednesday. . . . Atkins matched his career best with six RBI, a mark he also reached Sept. 18, 2006, against San Francisco. . . . Starting pitcher Jeff Francis earned his 24th win at Coors Field, matching Pedro As- tacio for the second most in team history. Jason Jennings is the all- time leader, with 26. . . . Matsui stole his 20th base and, combined with Willy Taveras' 29 steals, gave the Rockies two players with at least 20 steals for the first time since 1997, when Larry Walker (33), Eric Young (32) and Quinton McCracken (28) all eclipsed that mark. . . . Ryan Spilborghs has hit .405 (17-for-42) in his past 15 games. . . . The Rockies batted around the order twice in consecutive games for the first time in franchise history. . . . The team's seven runs in the second inning matched a season best set April 4 against Arizona. . . . Milwaukee had not allowed 19 runs in almost 11 years. . . . Milwaukee second baseman Tony Graffanino left the game after the first inning after suffering a sprained right knee while making a leaping catch of a line drive by Hawpe. Graffanino's replacement, Joe Dillon, went 3-for- 4 to post the first three-hit game of his career.
Scouting report: Chicago Cubs
Series history: The Cubs lead 66-61 overall and 34-30 in Denver, but the series is 26-26 at Coors Field. This season, the Cubs swept a three-game series June 25-27 at Wrigley Field.
Roster: Outfielder Alfonso Soriano (right quadriceps), catcher Henry Blanco (neck), infielder Daryle Ward (right calf), pitchers Angel Guzman (right elbow), Roberto Novoa (head) and Mark Prior (right shoulder), and outfielder Angel Pagan are on the disabled list. Kerry Wood, now a reliever, pitched Sunday for the first time one day short of 14 months. Outfielder Eric Patterson was recalled from Triple-A Iowa after Soriano's injury Sunday. Patterson's brother, Corey, is a former Cubs outfielder who now plays for Baltimore.
Quickly: The Cubs have lost six of their past seven but are 14-12 since the All-Star break. Their 36- 23 record since June 3 is the best in the National League. . . . Ryan Theriot, who is 20-for-24 in stolen- base attempts, is the first Cubs infielder with 20 steals since Young stole 54 bases in 2000 and 31 in 2001. . . . Cubs starters are 43-33 and, with the loss to Houston on Wednesday, had starters lose consecutive games for the first time since June 16-17.
