Couple dead in home

Douglas judge ordered man not to live with wife

Mario Estrada was arrested two months ago for pushing his wife, Kelly, and pinning her on the ground while destroying furniture inside their home, court records show.

Estrada, 34, was ordered by a Douglas County judge not to live with his wife. He pleaded guilty to criminal mischief.

Last month Kelly Estrada, 36, started the process to end their marriage.

Monday afternoon, Douglas County sheriff's deputies found the bodies of the couple in their Highlands Ranch home in the 8900 block of South Coyote Street after receiving a 911 call.

Detectives and the coroner have not revealed how the two died. But sheriff's spokeswoman Cocha Heyden said deputies were not actively searching for an assailant and that neighbors did not have to fear that they are in any danger.

"There was a little tension in the relationship," neighbor Greg Giesen said Tuesday. "They particularly tried to present a united front to the kids," a young son and daughter.

"If the kids are so important, it almost appeared they weren't in the equation with that act," he said.

Estrada ran his own flooring company and installed some hardwood floors in the neighborhood.

"He always had a smile on his face, he was always friendly," Giesen said.

The couple moved into the neighborhood about three years ago. Kelly Estrada had recently joined other neighbors for regularly scheduled "girls' nights" at people's houses.

The Estradas and their two children had participated in block parties and other events in the neighborhood, Giesen said.

"They were a very friendly, nice couple," Giesen remembered. "I tried to get them involved."

Giesen said he had heard that Kelly Estrada's parents were taking care of the couple's children when the incident occurred Monday.
