States' driver-license requirements vary

Sara asked about a recent article in the Rocky specifying the types of ID needed to get a driver's license in Colorado. The article said a valid license in 33 states qualifies; she wanted to know what was wrong with the other 16 states' licenses.

The 33 qualifying states all require proof that the license holders are in the U.S. legally, such as birth certificates or passports, before the agencies grant licenses. Colorado also requires such proof, but the other 16 states don't, said Colorado Department of Revenue spokeswoman Sandra Lowman.
