Three keys
Key moments in the Rockies' 6-5 loss in 10 innings to the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field on Sunday afternoon:
1 After Todd Helton singled in a run to tie the score 3-3, the Rockies had runners on first and third with no out in the sixth. Tyler Yates relieved Chuck James, and Garrett Atkins greeted him with a run-scoring double. Yates walked Ryan Spilborghs to load the bases, then struck out Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta before Aaron Cook popped to right.
2 Second baseman Jamey Carroll had a hard-hit ball off the bat of Yunel Escobar go off his glove for what was ruled an RBI single in the fourth for Atlanta's first run, then was charged with a two-out error on a Kelly Johnson groundball ahead of Chipper Jones' home run in the fifth.
3 With two out in the sixth, Braves center fielder Willie Harris, hitting .219 against left-handed pitchers, lined a 2-2 pitch into right center for an RBI double off left-hander Jeremy Affeldt, who had allowed left-handed hitters only a .218 average.
Etc.
The game-ending run allowed by Taylor Buchholz was only the second given up by Rockies relievers in their past 18 2/3 innings. . . . Left fielder Matt Holliday was back in the lineup Sunday despite a jammed right thumb that kept him from playing Saturday, only the third start he missed this year. "It's sore but it doesn't keep me from doing anything," Holliday said. He added to his assortment of injuries when he scraped his right ear along the padding of the left-field fence after chasing Corky Miller's double in the sixth. . . . The Rockies have equaled a franchise record with five grand slams this season. The record was set in 1994, and equaled in 1998, 2000 and 2002. . . . Atlanta rallied to win the game, but left-hander James had a no-decision. Left-handed starters are 1-6 with a 7.97 ERA over their last 10 games against the Rockies. . . . The 10 hits allowed by Cook equaled the second most he has allowed this season. He gave up 12 hits in six innings of an 8-4 loss to Philadelphia at Coors Field on July 8. He has given up 10 hits three times. . . . Helton had two RBI singles, his 35th multiple-hit game of the season, second to Holliday, who has 36. The two hits came after Helton had gone 3-for-23 the six previous games.
Scouting report: Milwaukee Brewers
Series history: The Rockies trail 33-35, but have a 21-12 edge in Denver. The Brewers are 6-3 at Coors Field the past three years, though. They also won two of three from the Rockies in Milwaukee in the first week after the All-Star break.
Roster report: The Brewers sent second baseman Rickie Weeks to Triple-A last week, and are going with veterans Tony Graffanino and Craig Counsell at second. . . . Third baseman Corey Koskie (post-concussion syndrome) and right-handed pitcher Ben Sheets (sprained right middle finger) are on the disabled list.
Quickly: The Brewers have lost 11-of-17. . . . They are 21-32 on the road, and have lost 11 of their last 14 on the road. . . . They have outscored the opposition 127-95 in the first two innings of games. . . . Center fielder Cory Hart has hit 15 of his 18 home runs from the leadoff spot, which ties Paul Molitor for fourth place on the team's leadoff home run chart. Tommy Harper set the franchise record with 31 home runs as a leadoff hitter in 1970, the year the Brewers moved to Milwaukee from Seattle. . . . Right-hander Scott Linebrink has worked four scoreless innings in four appearances since being acquired from San Diego.
