Roddick tops Isner for Legg Mason title

Andy Roddick put a stop to John Isner's dream week by beating the unseeded American 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to win his third Legg Mason Tennis Classic title in Washington.

Roddick, who also won the event in 2001 and 2005, won his 23rd Association of Tennis Professionals title by solving the 6- foot-9 Isner's serve, which had carried him to five straight wins in third-set tiebreakers.

In other tournaments:

Top-seeded Maria Sharapova earned her first title in 10 months with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 victory against Patty Schnyder in the final Acura Classic tournament in Carlsbad, Calif., after a 24-year run in the San Diego area.

Second-seeded Tommy Robredo beat Jose Acasuso 7-5, 6-0 to win the Prokom Open in Sopot, Poland.

Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska routed Vera Dushe- vina 6-1, 6-1 to win the Nordic Light Open in Stockholm, Sweden.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS SUPERSTAR? David Beckham missed his scheduled Major League Soccer debut, failing to dress for the Los Angeles Galaxy's match at Toronto FC.

Beckham, still bothered by a sore left ankle, wasn't among the starting 11 or seven substitutes for the match, played to a 0-0 tie before a sellout crowd of 20,500.

Beckham sprained his left ankle while playing for England against Estonia in a European Championship qualifier June 6, then hurt it again during Real Madrid's season finale June 17.

On Saturday, the 32-year-old midfielder said he cannot plant without pain and is seven to 10 days from being able to start.

He appears likely to miss England's exhibition match against Germany on Aug. 22, and the layoff could cause him to miss European Championship qualifiers against Israel on Sept. 8 and Russia on Sept. 12.

Since joining the Galaxy, Beckham has been limited to a 16- minute appearance on July 21 in an exhibition against England's Chelsea.

Luciano Emilio scored two goals as D.C. United (8-6-3) of MLS beat New England (9-4-6) 3- 0 in Foxborough, Mass., to snap the Revolution's five-match unbeaten streak.

Manchester United won the Community Shield, capturing the English Premier League soccer season opener by beating Chelsea 3-0 in a shootout, with goalie Edwin Van Der Sar saving all three penalty kicks he faced.

The teams had tied 1-1 after 90 minutes at Wembley before going straight to the shootout.

Celtic began defense of its Scottish Premier League title with a 0-0 tie against Kilmarnock.

Lyon began its French title defense with a 2-0 victory against visiting Auxerre.

ALSTON ARRESTED Rockets guard Rafer Alston, 31, was arrested early Sunday in downtown Houston on misdemeanor charges of assault and public intoxication, according to Houston police spokesman Victor Senties.

SKY FALLS Delisha Milton-Jones had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help the Washington Mystics hold on for a 71-66 win against the Chicago Sky.

Reserve Tamika Whitmore scored 16 points to help the Indiana Fever beat the Sacramento Monarchs 63-55 and clinch a playoff berth.

IRAN WHOOPS IT UP The Iranian basketball team won a spot in the Beijing Olympics by beating Lebanon 74-69 in the final of the FIBA Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan.

Iran, playing in its first Asia Championship final, was the only team from the 16-nation tournament to earn a place in the 2008 Summer Games.

POSITIVE TEST Colombian cyclist Libardo Niño, a silver medalist in the time trial at the Pan American Games, tested positive for the performance-enhancing hormone erythropoietin.

TWO-TIMER Norwegian rider Kurt Asle Arvesen became the first two-time winner of the Tour of Denmark cycling race, beating runner-up Enrico Gasparotto by 14 seconds.

FISHING PAYDAY Scott Suggs won the Forrest Wood Cup in Hot Springs, Ark., finishing with a two-day total of 17 pounds, 1 ounce. Suggs, from Bryant, Ark., claimed $1 million in prize money in what was billed as the most lucrative bass fishing tournament.
