Rocky staffers collect 'Scribes' awards

The Rocky Mountain News was honored for overall excellence in print journalism by the Colorado Association of Black Journalists in award ceremonies Friday night in Denver.

In its annual "Scribes in Excellence" honors, the CABJ named Rocky columnist Dave Krieger as top print sports journalist for his work on Denver gangs in the wake of the New Year's killing of Denver Bronco Darrent Williams.

The Rocky's Burt Hubbard, Nancy Mitchell and Judy DeHaas were recognized for top print enterprise for "Leaving to Learn," a report on the exodus of students from Denver Public Schools.

James B. Meadow won the print documentary feature for his Rocky series on black community leaders tracing their roots through DNA testing to Africa.

The Denver Post's Elana Ashanti Jefferson was named by CABJ as its print journalist of the year.

Additionally, The Post staff was recognized in print news for its coverage of the Williams slaying and in the print business category for its portrayal of former Mayor Wellington Webb, "Webb: A Wealth of Experience."

The Post won print photography multiple images for "Blizzard."

The weekly Denver Urban Spectrum was acknowledged for single image photo, documentary feature, print art and design.
