Rockies 9, Braves 2

TURNER FIELD

Three keys

Key moments in the Rockies' 9-2 win against the Atlanta Braves on Friday night at Turner Field:

1With the Rockies leading 4-1, Yunel Escobar and Kelly Johnson led off the bottom of the sixth with singles. But Jeff Francis struck out Chipper Jones and Mark Teixeira, and Garrett Atkins came up with an Andruw Jones shot down the third-base line, getting a force of Johnson at second.

2With two out and the bases loaded in the top of the first, Brad Hawpe slashed a groundball that went off the glove of Teixeira for a two-run error, giving the Rockies an early lead against John Smoltz.

3Smoltz intentionally walked Todd Helton with two out in the seventh, and Atkins followed with a three-run home run that put the Rockies up 7-1.

Etc.

Right-handed pitcher Mike DeJean, trying to come back from right shoulder surgery, has been placed on the disabled list by Triple-A Colorado Springs because of shoulder soreness. . . . The Rockies have won 14 of their past 20 series after winning only two of their first 15. With a victory tonight or Sunday, they would claim a series in Atlanta for only the second time in seven years. . . . Second baseman Kazuo Matsui had his third consecutive multiple-hit game, and he had a bunt single that led to a late rally for the second game in a row. . . . Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt worked a scoreless seventh. He is unscored upon in 25 of his past 29 appearances. . . . Jeff Baker, who popped up as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning Friday, has started only two of the past 31 games and is in a 2- for-21 slump. . . . Atkins has struck out only four times the past 18 games. . . . Ubaldo Jimenez Jr. will be pitching in front of his father in a professional game for the first time tonight. Ubaldo Jimenez Sr., who lives in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, is with his son in Atlanta. "It is the first time he has ever been on an airplane," Jimenez said of his 52-year-old father. "It is very exciting."
