DU's Sherlock takes tourney in Canada
University of Denver sophomore golfer Stephanie Sherlock earned a three-shot victory Friday in the Royale Cup National Women's Amateur Championship in Stouffville, Ontario, her first Canadian title.
"I never expected this to come so soon," said Sherlock, of Barrie, Ontario. "It's really nice because of how my game has improved over the last year."
Sherlock finished with a four- round total of 289, three shots ahead of Sue Kim, of Langley, British Columbia, at Granite Golf Club.
"I had a good feeling coming in this week," Sherlock said. "Practice has been going well and I felt something special could happen. I'm a little lost for words right now because this ranks up there. . . . It's big."
BUFFS ADD COACH Lindsey Ma-lone has been hired as an assistant track coach for jumps and multiple-event disciplines at the University of Colorado.
Malone, who previously served as assistant coach at Colorado State for heptathlon, decathlon, high jump and pole vault, replaces James Nyu- mutei, a 17-year veteran at CU.
"Coaching at CU is an extremely exciting opportunity and I look forward to the challenge," Malone said.
GOLDEN WEEKS Colorado Springs resident Mark Weeks won the men's 55-year-old title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Orono, Maine, finishing in 12 minutes, 25.06 seconds.
ANOTHER TIE FOR RUSH Chatfield High School athlete Zach Foxhoven scored two goals to help the Littleton-based Colorado Rush under-17 boys soccer team tie 2-2 with Waban, Mass.-based FC Greater Boston in the Red Bull National League tournament in Orange, Calif.
The Rush tied 0-0 on Thursday with Chicago-based Sockers FC.
SMITH ON FIRE Seth Smith drove in four runs to power the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 7-3 road win against the Round Rock Express in Pacific Coast League action.
IN THE SHOWCASE Pomona High School athlete Travis Cox has been chosen to play in the Ringor Showcase Series for high school baseball players Aug. 15 in Birmingham, Ala.
MWC HIRES Kiowa native Chelsea Guetz has been hired as assistant director of championships/communications for the Colorado Springs-based Mountain West Conference and Katie Cavender has been hired as an assistant director of communications.
