Three keys
Key moments in the Rockies' 4-3 win against the Florida Marlins on Thursday night at Dolphin Stadium:
1 Garrett Atkins, after Todd Helton struck out looking with Matt Holliday on third, delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly to right field in the eighth inning. Holliday had doubled against Marlins reliever Armando Benitez, driving in Kazuo Matsui with the tying run.
2 Atkins singled, after back- to-back two-out walks to Holliday and Helton in the first, driving in the game's first run.
3 Matsui took over the speed game from Willy Taveras. Besides a bunt single to start the rally in the eighth, Matsui singled and stole second with out in the third, then scored the Rockies' second run on Holliday's ensuing single.
Etc.
Taveras was called out on a steal attempt to end the fifth inning, ending his streak of 19 consecutive successful stolen bases. Taveras and manager Clint Hurdle argued the tag never was made even though catcher Miguel Olivo's throw was there in plenty of time, but umpire Bruce Froemming stood by his call. . . . Atkins singled home the Rockies' run in the first, and he had the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth, giving him 11 RBI during the past nine games. . . . The Rockies' 16 strikeouts Wednesday equaled the most in the majors this year. It has happened five other times, most recently by the Cincinnati Reds against the Los Angeles Angels on June 12. The Rockies followed by striking out 12 times Thursday. . . . Marlins left-handed reliever Renyel Pinto came on with two on in the fifth and struck out Matsui, then threw a pitch to Holliday before leaving the game with a left shoulder strain. . . . Helton went 0-for-3, striking out twice, leaving him in a 7-for-40 slump that has dropped his average to .296, the lowest it has been since April 14 (.282). . . . Right fielder Brad Hawpe went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, giving him six strikeouts in the past two games. He is in a 10-for-54 slide since the All-Star break.
