STYLE MATTERS: Women's golf fashions finally up to par

Published August 2, 2007 at midnight

Evelinda: Watching the Ladies Professional Golf Association tournaments on TV, I'm impressed by how fashionable female golfers have become.

Judie: Until recently, golf clothing has been old-fashioned and unflattering. Early professional women golfers, like Babe Didrikson Zaharias, founding member of the LPGA, had to contend with constricting outfits. When asked how she could regularly drive the ball 250 yards, she said, "You've got to loosen your girdle and let it rip," according to ESPN.com.

Today's LPGA golfers are not afraid to show their femininity. Whether you like the head-to-toe pink outfits worn by Paula Creamer or the super-flared pants of Lorena Ochoa, there is now a style for you.

We asked local female golfers how they stay fashionable.

Leslie Fishbein, president of Kacey Fine Furniture, says, "Women want to feel attractive on the golf course and still follow the dress rules. In reality, it's very hard to find fashionable golf clothes."

Fishbein likes ensembles by Nuni, periodically available at Golfsmith (golfsmith.com for locations), and Lija, which is available at some pro shops (lijastyle.com). To complete her outfits, Fishbein ties a matching scarf around a wide-brimmed hat.

"I love to play in skorts with a touch of Lycra for flexibility," says Anne Ingebretsen, Greenwood Village city councilwoman.

She scours the racks at Golf Galaxy, Niketown, Nordstrom and the Cherry Hills Country Club pro shop.

Professional volunteer Pam Stearman is a big fan of microfiber fabrics. "I don't want to look wrinkled when I finish 18 holes."

Community volunteer Gail Kassan advises sticking to lighter colors to deflect the heat.

Patti Brown, sales associate at the Polo Ralph Lauren store at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, has her faves: "Skinny long shorts are a must because they are very slenderizing." And no pockets. "That's why they have golf bags. I need no extra bulges."
