Rapids sign forward Osorno to contract

The Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer signed former Mexican National Team forward Daniel Osorno on Wednesday.

Osorno last played for CF Atlas of the Mexican first division. Details of the signing were not disclosed.

Osorno, 28, is available to play his first match with the Rapids (4-8-6) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against FC Dallas (9-6-3) in Frisco, Texas.

During the 2003 Gold Cup final, Osorno scored the winning goal for Mexico in extra time against Brazil to win the tournament.

MAMMOTH DESIGNATES CATTON For the second consecutive season, the National Lacrosse League's Colorado Mammoth have designated defenseman Rich Catton a franchise player, shielding the veteran from unrestricted free agency.

Catton, 35, has recorded one goal and 14 assists and picked up 131 loose balls while playing in all 32 regular-season games for the Mammoth the past two seasons.

He has added three assists and 23 loose balls in four playoff games.

WETRICH LEAVES PIONEERS University of Denver point guard Steve Wetrich has left the men's basketball team because of multiple concussions, coach Joe Scott announced.

Wetrich last season averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists in 14 games.

DU SECOND; AIR FORCE SIXTH The Pioneers men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's preseason poll behind New Mexico.

The Air Force men were projected to finish last in the six-team league. The Falcons were 5-12-1 last season.

Denver (11-5-2 in 2006) received one first-place vote.

DU VOLLEYBALL ADDS TRIO Brittany Adams of Columbine High School, Tessa Grose of Maranatha Christian and Kacie Wikierak of Crystal Lake, Ill., have joined the DU volleyball team.

AMBASSADORS WIN The Colorado 14ers' Pooh Jeter closed the second half with two baskets and a three-pointer to help the NBA Development League's Ambassadors an 18-point halftime lead against Angola in an 85-72 win at the Stankovic Cup in Macao, China.

The Ambassadors (3-1) play today against China (2-2).

SKY SOX LOSE Mike Esposito gave up nine runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Pacific Coast League's Colorado Springs Sky Sox lost 9-5 to the Express in Round Rock, Texas.
