A 52-year-old Lakewood man was sentenced today to 2 1/2 years supervised probation and two weeks in jail after he was convicted of attempted sexual assault on a child from an Internet chat room.

Dorne Grady Butts was arrested in December of last year after he spent three days chatting with an undercover investigator from the district attorney's office. Butts believed the investigator was a 14-year-old girl.

Court records show Butts was sexually graphic in describing what he wanted to do to the teen, saying the two "would have to trust each other and keep it a secret."

Butts asked the girl to come to his house. She agreed to meet him, and Butts was arrested at his Lakewood home before the scheduled meeting.

Butts at his sentencing today said he would have had sexual relations with the 14-year-old if she had been willing. Butts said he had recently lost his girlfriend and was depressed, which is why he pursued the teen.

Butts, who must register as a sex offender, had entered a guiilty plea at attempted sexual assault on a child in May.
