Film starring Eddie Murphy to be shot in Denver

Denver has attracted a major movie production called Nowhereland, a comedy starring Eddie Murphy that is set to be filmed here starting in September.

Colorado officials and Paramount Pictures are expected to make a joint announcement soon, according to sources who declined to be identified.

Murphy will play a "financial executive who can't stop his career downspiral and is invited into his daughter’s imaginary world, where solutions to his problems await," according to the Internet Movie Database web site.

Gov. Bill Ritter’s office is said to be preparing an announcement in conjunction with Paramount.

Ginger White, senior economic development specialist for the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, said her office has been contacted about the production.

"They have come to us about locations," White said. "The film is set in Denver."

While White didn’t provide any information on specific locations, she said she expects filming to take place "in all points of the city."

How long will the crew set up shop here? "We think two weeks, but that is still being firmed up," White said.

The majority of the scenes will not be shot in Colorado, but two weeks of production time is still worth a lot to the local economy.

The average production has been credited with spending about $100,000 a day while on location.

The film would not be eligible for state film incentives because most of it will be shot outside the state. Colorado has a small pot of money to entice filmmakers, but most big productions take their business elsewhere where funding is more plentiful.

The last big movies to have scenes shot in Colorado: Resurrecting the Champ and Catch and Release.

New Mexico has attracted far more big-name films in recent years because it offers 25 percent rebates to filmmakers. Texas recently approved $22 million in incentives for producers shooting their movies there.

Nowhereland will be directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, who directed the 2006 animated film Over the Hedge. Kirkpatrick wrote the screenplays for Charlotte’s Web and Chicken Run, among others.

The production company is Di Bonaventura Pictures, which is also slated to produce the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop IV.
