Coroner IDs van driver killed in collision with fleeing car

Published August 1, 2007 at midnight

AURORA — A driver who was killed when his minivan collided with a car that was fleeing from police was identified today as 49-year-old Brian Gleason.

The victim's city of residence was unavailable this afternoon from the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office.

The fleeing motorist who hit Gleason's minivan was seriously injured and taken to a hospital after the crash last night, Aurora police Detective Robert Friel said.

The name of the suspect was not immediately available.

Friel said a woman phoned police shortly before 8 last night from an apartment in the 15500 block of East 12th Avenue to report a domestic dispute with a man. She later called police to say the man was in a Dodge Intrepid sedan and armed with a gun.

Officers spotted the car near the woman's apartment and pulled it over just north of East Colfax Avenue on Chambers Road.

The driver took off, heading north on Chambers, but police decided not to chase him, Friel said.

The fleeing driver ran a red light and crashed into Gleason's westbound minivan at Smith Road, Friel said. The minivan also was hit broadside by another vehicle and pushed off the road into a ditch. The suspect's sedan stopped on the west side of Chambers Road.

Gleason died at the scene.

Police said they recovered a gun at the scene of the crash.

The suspect faces multiple charges when he is released from the hospital, including vehicular homicide.
